Flamenco Workshop with Francine Sweet

December 2001, Calgary

Francine Sweet

Francine Sweet (Quica) has been dancing since age five with a strong base in classical ballet and contemporary dance. She began flamenco in New Zealand under the tutelage of Luis Ramon, a retired dancer from Madrid. Inspired by him, she later moved to Vancouver, Canada where she teamed up with guitarist Gerardo Alcala and began performing with the group Flamenco Alcala and among other North American and Spanish artists. She made her theatre debut at the Baker Theatre in Bellingham, Washington with accomplished dancers Teo Morca and Sara de Luis, and solo debut with Carmen Romero at the Waterfront Theatre in Vancouver. Over this time she continued to perform regularly at a variety of local venues including folk festivals and tablaos.

In Spain she has acquired extensive training and coaching with leading artists such as Alejandro Granados, Maria Bermudez, La Tati, Maria Magdelena, Ana-Maria Lopez, Domingo Ortega, el Rin and others. Although it is exceedingly difficult for a non-Spaniard to gain the respect of, and work with the most authentic flamenco artists, the gypsies of Andalucia, she has worked extensively in the Parrilla gypsy family tablao in Jerez de la Frontera (a town known as the "cradle of flamenco"), and also performed solo in the province of Cadiz on many occasions with two of Spain's most respected artists, singer Luis Agujetas, and guitarist, Nino Jero. Most recently she is performing with a group of her own assemblage in Jakarta, Indonesia, comprising; three young and brilliant artists from Jerez de la Frontera; Santiago gypsy singer Luis Vargas, talented accompaniest Jesus Alvarez, and vibrant dancer Rosario "La Mejorana". Over the last two years she has taught for Mozaico Flamenco in Vancouver and conducted workshops throughout western Canada and in northern states of the USA.

Francine's style, as it continues to develop it's own unique flavour, is emotionally intense, dynamic, and full of soul.
