Instructors
Claudia Carolina
Guest Flamenco Choreographer and Instructor

Claudia Carolina is a powerful dancer and the nation’s most esteemed Flamenco choreographer. Ms. Carolina lived in Spain for ten years, studying and working with such legends as Manolete, Paco Fernandes, “El Veneno” and the late Maria Alba. She has toured and worked in Spain, Europe, the Middle East, U.S.A. and Canada. She choreographed and performed in Misa Flamenca, the first Flamenco Mass to be realized in Canada which debuted in 1999 to sold-out audiences, Mariposa the first Flamenco drama to be performed at the Canada Dance Festival in 2004 and most recently The Women.

Jim Shewchuk
Flamenco Guitarist

Jim Shewchuk began playing Flamenco guitar in 1984 and has been entranced by the art form ever since. His style shows a reverence for the early masters of Flamenco guitar such as the late Sabicas. However, his sincere playing has a dreamlike, emotive quality that is purely original. He is known for his pure Flamenco sound. Jim has recently returned from Spain where he performed at the Festival Mundial Folklorico.

Claire Marchand
Flamenco Dance, Rhythm & Singing

Claire Marchand is a featured soloist in Flamenco festivals across Canada and internationally (Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2006, Vancouver Jondo Festval 2006, Taipei 2006) and in interdisciplinary works such as TRIPdance company’s A Company of One.  As an independent dancer and choreographer she has created and collaborated in many works, including Encuentro (2003) and Puertos (2004) with Maritel Centurion, Recent successes include her work La Maja solo dance works (2005), Flamenco Spirit (2005) and “RITMO! Flamenco meets Latino” (Sept 2006)

Following early studies in Spanish Regional styles with Carmen Cano de Infante, Claire studied with Flamenco choreographer Claudia Carolina, founder of Theatre Flamenco.  She went on to study yearly in Spain with such maestros as El Guito, Manolete, La Cintia, Belen Maya, the singer Talegon de Cordoba and many others.

As a member of Theatre Flamenco dance collective, Claire produces and performs in innovative works such as Misa Flamenca (1999 and 2001), Mariposa (2002 and Canada Dance Festival 2004), and The Women (2007) in addition to her independent work.
Claire Marchand teaches in Winnipeg at her own studio as well as for the Professional Program at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.  She has taught private students in Madrid and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain and for “Esencia Flamenca” Academy in Taipei, Taiwan.
